• >> [SPL] Tactical Analysis: YGL in a compact 4-4-2 out-of-possession with tight man-marking vs. BGT | 14 Sep 2024, 1800hrs, Jalan Besar Stadium

    Figure 1 – YGL in a compact 4-4-2 out-of-possession with tight man-marking.

11′: YGL chose to give up both flanks and did not press the BGT back line aggressively in order to form a compact 4-4-2 in the centre of the pitch. Each player had an opposition player closely marked, with two markers on BGT main striker No.9 Kopitović in the centre.

Figure 2 – Off the ball run by YGL No.8 cuts off the passing lane from BGT No.18 to No.7.

Both YGL No.8 and No.26 deviate from their respective defensive lines. YGL No.26 runs forward to pressure BGT No.18 (with the ball). YGL No.8 runs back to cut off the passing lane to BGT No.7 (instead of running towards the ball). The ball is eventually played out to the right flank to BGT No.6.

  • >> [SGWPL] Tactical Analysis: How SAWFC could have prevented the first two goals in LCSWT vs. SAWFC | 15 Sep 2024, 1700hrs, CCK Stadium

By starting Pamela Kong as GK. So simple.

However, SAWFC’s top choice GK was missing from the team sheet on their last, and arguably biggest, game of the season. So here we are, with a short note on how SAWFC could have prevented the inevitable from happening for just a little while longer.

Figure 1 – 8’: SAWFC midfield positioning was too narrow, leaving LCSWT No.8 unmarked.

8’: The first LCSWT goal came about from a quick switch of play from the left half-space to the right corner of the SAWFC penalty area.

LCSWT No.19 Yuvika Suresh passes the ball right to No.23 Sarah Zu’risqha just outside the SAWFC penalty box in the centre. Sarah follows on with another pass to the right to an unmarked No.8 Syazwani. Syazwani lofts the ball towards No.9 Raeka Ee right in front of the six-yard box and Raeka it in for the opener.

In this play, the defensive shape of the SAWFC midfield was not wide enough to cover the run of Syazwani. A traditional midfield four would be spread out zonally to cover a broader horizontal area, with an eye for marauding full-backs making runs down the flanks.

Figure 2 – 34′: LCSWT No.15 runs into space unmarked and lofts a pass over the back line to No.9.

34′: The second LCSWT goal was similar to the first in that it came about via a lofted pass over the back line onto the path of centre-forward No.9 Raeka Ee.

One problem with a 5-4-1 formation is that communication between the midfield and the back line needs to be perfect because the back line will often have an extra friendly player or two not marking an opposition player.

Here, the SAWFC midfield is in a tough spot because the midfield is overloaded in a 3v4 on their right flank. This allowed LCSWT centre-back No.15 to dribble into the half-space unmarked and deliver a pass to Raeka. If the SAWFC midfield shifts to mark No.15, an LCSWT player will be freed up to receive the ball.

Ideally, one SAWFC player from the back line should be free to roam to shadow retreating opposition forwards or advancing defenders. If the formation changes to a 4-4-2, one of the SAWFC forwards can drop back to mark the extra LCSWT player.

    Match: LCSWT 6-0 SAWFC | 15 Sep 2024

  • >> [SGWPL] LCSWT 6-0 SAWFC | 15 Sep 2024, 1700hrs, CCK Stadium

    • 90 minutes to K.O.: For all the many, many shortcomings of SGWPL as a league… there will never be another time like this: where players can watch other teams play in-person before their own game; where friends can take photos with friends from the other side right after the match; where fans can take selfies with players and ask: “CaN I HaVe YoUr AuToGrApH? 🤩”

The league will continue to develop professionally over time — raising both standards and barriers. Things will be a bit more “corporate” and a bit less “kampung”. It will be a more exciting time for some as a pathway to greater things but a put-off for others who just wanna play some football.

All I’m trying to say is: Enjoy the ride, however bumpy and uneven. Walk along this way again, we shall not.
    • Two hours to K.O.: All beginnings must have an end. All campaigns must have a champion. One last time for 2024. Let’s GOOOAL!!!

      BKWT 0-0 LCSWT
    • K.O.: BKWT 0-0 LCSWT

    • 90 mins to K.O.: My only humble recommendation to BKWT is this — just hoof the ball away. Kick it out, play it long etc.

The further the ball is from the goal, the more LCSWT will have to work the ball back into the box, the more chance mistakes can happen.

Short passes are the worst option to go for in all phases of this game.
    • 2 hours to K.O.: Today’s mission is simple — I will attempt to document every single LCSWT goal in as much detail as I can as they happen LIVE.

I think I gave up at about 12-0 in the previous round. 😬
