• [SPL] 30% Posession Lion City Sailors | Mar 2025

The problem with investing heavily in one particular style of play is that when it comes to playing the games which you really need to win — often against stronger opponents — you would typically be forced to play the exact opposite of the style you are used to deploying.

During the AFC Champions League Two group stage, Lion City Sailors averaged 37% possession across six games against her regional peers — significantly lower than what they are used to in the domestic league. If LCS decided to specialise in patient build-up, possession-based football without developing a more direct, counter-attacking style of play, they would not have progressed far in the prestigious regional competition.

Thankfully, the oft-used 5-4-1 system and Wünder-Uncle Shawal Anuar are equally good at low blocks vis-a-vis playing on the front foot. To this outside observer, LCS are sufficiently drilled to play dimetrically different styles of play, depending on the opposition on matchday.

    • 3 hrs to K.O.: Last year, there was an Encik who would sit at the front row of the stands at CCK Stadium, by himself, to watch the SGWPL games. He knew all the past scores and the table standings. He could spot and name the key players in each team. Amazingly, he was on top of all the midseason transfers and switches.

“I don’t like one-sided games,” he said to me once. “I prefer it when both teams have to fight it out to see who wins.”

I hope I get to see him again sometime this season. I hope the league is more competitive than last year, too.

  • [SPL] What is Itsuki Enomoto? | Feb 2025

When it was announced that Seia Kunori would join BG Tampines Rovers (BGT) at the start of the 2024/25 season, outside observers were immediately curious as to his exact role in the BGT setup.

Would he be a goal scorer or a chance creator? If he is to be a goal scorer, would he poach inside the opposition penalty box together with Boris Kopitović or hover around the box as a longer-range option? If he is to be a chance creator, does he thread through balls for his teammates to finish or make the pass before the pass leading to the goal? The answer, so far, seems to be: “Yes”.

With the departure of Kopitović mid-season and the arrival of Ituski Enomoto as his replacement, the same set of questions presents itself again: What is Enomoto’s exact role in the BGT setup?

  • >> [SPL] The Jogging-Press of Boris Kopitović | Feb 2025

Out-of-possession pressing in modern day football requires high levels of intensity, stamina, and game intelligence from a pack of players working together to probe the opposition and force a turnover.

The arrival of 24-year-old Itsuki Enomoto at BG Tampines Rovers (BGT) — as Boris Kopitiović’s replacement — has allowed BGT to implement a more aggressive pressing structure higher up the pitch. However, this means the team shape is relatively more stretched vertically vis-a-vis when Kopitović led the press from the front; the opposition has more space to play through the gaps between the pressing pack and the rest of the team.

Individual player profiles always affect the whole, for better and for worse.
