  • [SGWPL] Controlling Football | Apr 2025

    Controlling football, as a style of play, isn’t just about having the ball and maintaining as much possession as possible. With a coherent game plan and team structure, you can also control the game out of possession (OOP). By deploying certain formations and pressing patterns, the OOP team can control the game through forcing the opposition into pre-determined zones and patterns of play. Just because you don’t touch the ball, it doesn’t mean you are not moving it.

    For a brief moment, both GIWT and ALBWT were perfectly poised in and around the centre circle — mirror images of each other in a tight 4-4-2 mid-block formation — both sides disciplined, tentatively prodding for gaps to exploit. Everyone knew what was at stake; everyone knew who was waiting for the game’s outcome. Rivals make us better; without competition, we are lesser.

    • Hariss Harun played as the single pivot CDM. In LCS, he would typically be paired with Rui Pires or Hami Syahin in a double pivot system.
    • Kyoga Nakamura can and should play the full 90 minutes. Irreplaceable creative dynamo in the central area of the offensive third. That killer face after receiving a yellow card for a late tackle to kill a counterattack.
    • Glenn Kweh on the left flank as a width holder and inside forward was 11/10. Good headache for BGTR Head Coach Gavin Lee, who has been deploying Glenn on the right in recent BGT games.
    • HKG were happy to gift SGP the possession in 1H. HKG set up to absorb pressure and nullify the reaction energy from the SGP 1-0 loss to Nepal. HKG finishing let them down in 2H.
    • There were ~8,000 SGP fans at the National Stadium on a Tuesday night. Do fans come only if the football is good? Or do the fans have to come, then the football will be good? Only the first tier of seats was opened for booking — the second and third tiers could not be booked.
