GOOOAL FC Special: It has been just over a hundred days since Joel Chew suffered a right mid-shaft fracture while playing for the Singapore National Football Team in a match against China in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifier on 26 March 2024. GFC asked him a few questions about his recovery journey.
Q: How have you been doing since your injury? Has this recovery period been harder or easier than you imagined?
I’ve been doing good but this recovery period has been harder than I imagined and every time I feel like I’m going to return to action, something else will come up due to the injury. 😅 So yea, it’s been tough.
Q: What has been the most challenging aspect(s) of the recovery process?
I think rehabbing alone and watching the team from the gym is not the best feeling in the world as you want to be on the field with them.
Q: Who or what has helped you physically and mentally the most to help you through this period?
I think having a supportive circle of friends and teammates and the physios such as Kak Fizah have really helped me during this time and encouraged me to keep going. Not to forget my partner and family as well, of course, as they have always made things better throughout this period.
Q: Do you have any message for other sports people who are undergoing similar injury / recovery experiences?
Don’t give up! It’ll be worth it! 👍🏼
